High neck long bat sleeved top pattern – VAGUE
£8.50
The Vague pattern is a long bat sleeve top with a high neck and a beautiful curved seamline running across the chest and shoulders. It is slightly fitted at the waist but overall comfortable because it is made to be sewn in knit fabrics. This top can get you through autumn and winter. Plus you can pair it easily with your existing wardrobe, and layer it with anything from cardigans, vests, to dresses or dungarees. This original design allows to be bold and make colour blocking tops, and be creative with the curved seamline: you could expose the seam allowances or add piping. Very quick to sew, you can finish it up in less than half a day.
This PDF pattern includes:
- the A4 pattern (16 pages);
- the US letter pattern (16 pages);
- the A0 pattern (1 page);
- a step by step instructions guide with detailed hand painted illustrations (8 pages).
All PDFs allow you to print the size(s) you need thanks to the layer functionality in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Level: intermediate
Designed to be sewn with an overlocker with a 7mm seam allowance, Vague can also be sewn with your usual sewing machine. Knowing how to use a double needle is a plus. The curved seam is the trickiest part of the sewing.

My measurements
Bust 84cm (33″) – Waist 69cm (26 ¾”) – hips 92cm (35 ⅞“) – 1.58m tall (5’2”). I made all the samples in size B.
Suggested fabrics (m yards)
Light to medium weight stretch knit fabrics like cotton jersey or sweatshirt, with 30-50% elasticity (10cm of fabric goes up to 13-15cm when stretched). Prefer a fabric with a good recovery rate (that recovers its initial shape after being stretched) to avoid any disappointment.
Samples shown in the pictures
I made the pink and red version and the purple version in a Mind The Maker cotton jersey. The black and white check version is a viscose jersey and the pink version is a polyester jersey, both fabrics come from Rainbow Fabric Kilburn.
Notions
- – A twin needle for jersey and a jersey needle for your sewing machine;
- – Iron on tape / stay tape (30cm) to reinforce the shoulders.
